All of last week’s point scoring action took place at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile Racecourse. The racing started on the Thursday with the Tattersalls Stakes Group 3 which was won emphatically by Wichita and jockey Ryan Moore. Wichita put in a decisive performance and looks to be one to follow when he steps up in grade. This was followed by the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes where Withhold put in a similarly impressive performance under Jason Watson to justify his short price and win by six lengths.

Friday’s card was jam-packed with point scoring opportunities, the first of which was the Listed Rosemary Stakes. The race saw a tight finish between the first three, but Agincourt just managed to hold on to deny the fast finishing She’s Got You and Richmond Avenue. The day’s only Group 3 was next and saw Spirit Of Appin land the prize. The first two home drew well clear of the rest, but Spirit Of Appin was always doing enough to hold the Aiden O’Brien trained Simply Beautiful.

Next up were the two Shadwell Group 2 contests. The Rockfel Stakes came first and was won gamely by Daahyeh under jockey William Buick. Well done to player David Marshall who was the only person to select the Roger Varian trained horse and secure 30 points. The feature Shadwell Joel Stakes followed and King Of Comedy went off as hot favourite after putting in good performances at Royal Ascot and the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival. However, it was the globetrotting Benbatl who wowed the crowds on his first run for 335 days, quickening clear and winning comfortably by five lengths. The final point scoring race on Friday was the Godolphin Stakes and the boys in blue triumphed in their own race with Mountain Hunter getting home in front under champion jockey elect Oisin Murphy.

The action didn’t slow down on the Saturday as the card opened with the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes. After just losing out in the Solario Stakes at Sandown Park Kameko was sent off favourite, and a furlong out he looked set to win. However, outsider of the field Royal Dornoch battled back towards the line to just get in front to win by a neck.

The two Group 1 races followed, starting with the Cheveley Park Stakes for fillies which saw Millisle win at a big price for the Harrington team. Millisle ran on well in the final furlong to pass the favourite Raffle Prize and get home in front. The final point scoring opportunity of the week was the Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes, and racegoers were excited to see if Mums Tipple could emulate her stunning victory at York in a more competitive race. However, it was Earthlight that went off as favourite and he delivered, improving his record to five wins from five starts.

With only David Marshall scoring points this week it remains unchanged at the top of the table with Paul Timms and Alan Wellsteed still battling it out on 655 points apiece. The full standings can be viewed here.
